| 11/11/2009 | Jason Varitek, C (Bos) | Varitek has exercised his $3 million option to stay with the Red Sox. Boston declined to exercise its $5 million club option on Monday, and Varitek then had two days to decide whether to exercise his player option at the lower price. Analysis: The 37-year-old was Boston’s starting catcher for nine of 10 seasons through 2008, except in 2001 when he was limited to 51 games because of injury. He was the regular last season until Boston obtained Victor Martinez from Cleveland on July 31. He threw out just 10 of 118 runners attempting to steal this year. |

| 11/11/2009 | Ken Griffey Jr., RF (Sea) | Griffey and the Mariners are closing in on a deal for another one-year contract. A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press the announcement could come later Wednesday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has not formally announced the agreement. Analysis: Griffey turns 40 this month. The contract is expected to be similar to the one-year incentive-laden deal he signed to return to Seattle for the 2009 season. He hit .214 with 19 homers as a part-time designated hitter. Griffey is No. 5 on the career home run list with 630. |
| 11/10/2009 | Mark Teixeira, 1B (NYY) | Teixeira has won a Gold Glove at first base, joining New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter among the American League players honored for fielding excellence. Analysis: Teixeira and Jeter helped lead the Yankees past Philadelphia last week for the team's 27th World Series championship. |
| 11/10/2009 | Derek Jeter, SS (NYY) | Jeter has won his fourth Gold Glove at shortstop, joining New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira among the American League players honored for fielding excellence. Analysis: Jeter and Teixeira helped lead the Yankees past Philadelphia last week for the team's 27th World Series championship. |
| 11/10/2009 | Cameron Maybin, CF (Fla) | Maybin, 22, underwent surgery to repair a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder. The Marlins announced everything went well, and he is expected to be ready when spring training opens in February. Analysis: Maybin hit .250 with four homers and 13 RBIs in 54 games last season, but batted .293 with eight doubles, three home runs, 10 RBIs and 19 runs scored in September. |
| 11/9/2009 | Will Ohman, RP (LAD) | The Dodgers have declined a $2.2 million club option on Ohman for next season. Analysis: The left-hander gets a $200,000 buyout and filed for free agency Monday. He went on the disabled list May 29 with a sore shoulder, and didn't make the Dodgers' postseason roster. Ohman, who pitched for Atlanta last year, had a $1.35 million salary this year with the Dodgers, who purchased his contract from Triple-A Las Vegas in April. |
| 11/9/2009 | Carl Crawford, LF (TB) | The Tampa Bay Rays have exercised their $10 million option on Crawford. Analysis: The 28-year-old Crawford was the MVP of this year's All-Star game. The speedy left fielder also is the longest-tenured player in Rays history and the franchise's career leader in hits, runs, steals, triples, RBIs and games. He hit .305 with 15 homers, 68 RBIs and a career-high 60 steals this year. |
| 11/9/2009 | Alex Gonzalez, SS (Bos) | The Red Sox declined a $6 million team option on Gonzalez. Analysis: They may try to sign the shortstop to a cheaper deal. He hit .284 in 44 games after coming to the Red Sox in a midseason trade from Cincinnati. |
| 11/9/2009 | Tim Wakefield, SP (Bos) | Boston agreed to a $5 million, two-year contract with Wakefield, replacing a perpetual $4 million annual club option. Analysis: The 43-year-old knuckleballer struggled with injuries toward the end of the 2009 season, but he was 11-3 at the All-Star break. |
| 11/9/2009 | Jason Varitek, C (Bos) | The Red Sox declined their $5 option on Varitek - hardly a surprise considering he hit .134 from Aug. 1 to the end of the season and threw out three of 34 base stealers in that stretch. Analysis: The veteran can stay with the team if he exercises his $3 million player option, but it would be in a backup capacity after Boston picked up Victor Martinez's option. |
| 11/9/2009 | Victor Martinez, C (Bos) | The Red Sox have exercised their $7.7 million option on Martinez. Analysis: The move was expected after Boston obtained Martinez from the Cleveland Indians on July 31 and he replaced Jason Varitek as the starting catcher. He hit .336 with 41 RBIs in 51 games with the Red Sox to help them reach the postseason. |
| 11/9/2009 | Mike Cameron, CF (Mil) | Cameron filed for free agency on Monday, ending his two-year tenure with the Brewers. Analysis: Cameron's spot will be taken by Carlos Gomez, who was acquired Friday from Minnesota for shortstop J.J. Hardy. Cameron hit .250 with 24 homers and 70 RBIs last season. |
| 11/8/2009 | Scott Eyre, RP (Phi) | Eyre will have surgery on Monday. Dr. Michael Ciccotti will remove loose bodies from Eyre's left elbow. Analysis: Eyre had a 1.50 ERA in 42 games in 2009. |
| 11/8/2009 | Raul Ibanez, LF (Phi) | Ibanez will have surgery on Monday. Dr. Bill Meyers will repair Ibanez's sports hernia. Analysis: Ibanez hit a career-high 34 homers in his first season with Philadelphia. This should not set him back at the start of next season. |
| 11/7/2009 | Brad Lidge, RP (Phi) | Lidge will have surgery on his right elbow on Wednesday. Analysis: Lidge is scheduled to have a loose body removed and Dr. Michael Ciccotti also will evaluate his right flexor/pronator tendon. Lidge led the majors with 11 blown saves this season but was better in the playoffs as the Phillies reached the World Series before losing to the Yankees in six games. |
| 11/7/2009 | Carl Pavano, SP (Min) | Pavano filed for free agency Saturday. Analysis: Pavano went 5-4 with a 4.64 ERA this season for the Twins after starting the season with the Indians. |
| 11/7/2009 | J.J. Putz, RP (NYM) | Putz filed for free agency Saturday. Analysis: Putz became a free agent one day after New York declined his $9.1 million option and chose to pay a $1 million buyout. |
| 11/7/2009 | Michael Cuddyer, RF (Min) | The Minnesota Twins have picked up Cuddyer's $10.5 million option for 2011. The option is part of a contract Cuddyer signed in 2008. He will make $8.5 million in 2010 and be paid $33.5 million over the life of the four-year deal. If the Twins had declined the option, they would have owed Cuddyer a $1 million buyout. Analysis: Cuddyer hit a career-high 32 home runs to lead the team. He also had 94 RBIs and was sixth in the American League with 73 extra-base hits. When slugger Justin Morneau went out with a back injury in September, Cuddyer moved from right field to first base. He hit .352 with seven homers and 22 RBIs in the next 19 games as the Twins leapfrogged the Tigers and won the AL Central title. |
| 11/6/2009 | Austin Kearns, RF (Was) | The Washington Nationals have declined their $10 million option on Kearns and are paying a $1 million buyout, presumably ending his disappointing tenure with the team. Analysis: The 29-year-old Kearns hit only .195 with three homers and 17 RBIs in 174 at-bats this season, when he was hampered by a thumb problem. Elbow and foot injuries limited Kearns to 86 games in 2008, when he batted .217 with seven homers and 32 RBIs. In 2007, his only full season in Washington, Kearns hit .266 with 16 homers and 74 RBIs. |
